Thank-you! I had read this a year or two ago whenever it came out. I bought U-Guard and it worked great! Now I have another mare with not much of a appetite. I am going today and buy some more to see it this helps her. I also have a gelding that just hates being brushed. He has progressively gotten worse, so I am going to try him on it also. Yes, I can smack him and he will allow me to brush him, but I want to know why he doesn't like it.

Dr. Kellon,

Can a long history of skin problems be another symptom of colonic ulcers and/or right dorsal colitis?

As long as I have known my horse (5 years) he has been plagued with recurring bouts of rain rot, ring worm and mild, gassy colic. Although dewormer, stress and acorns have previously been implicated as the the causes of his most recent episodes, I am wondering if these symptoms could all be related and point to colonic ulcers instead.

Tried polo wraps, but weeds etc covered them.
Any ideas?
Enjoy life.

It was amazing to tour the South Hamiton area and ride the trails in Boxford and see, first hand, what has been accomplished by Susanna, Natasha and the many others associated with the Essex County Trail Association,, Essex Cty Greenbelt, the Trustees and Boxford Trail Association/Boxford Open Land Trust. There are many had working and dedicated folks working to protect these North shore farms and trails for equestrian activity and general quality of life. These are wonderful examples for others. I hope these stories and the passionate individuals inspire others to act similarly in their own home towns.

We are blessed on Boston's North Shore to have properties like Crane Beach and Appleton Farms protected by the Trustees of Reservations and many other public and private places where we can still gallop on and jump as well as quietly hack through. Our Essex County Trail Association works in 6 towns and has 450 miles of trails available for our passive recreation. Neil Ayer encouraged us to start this work and he would be pleased today. Thank you for this article.

I totally agree with your article, even if I don't own any horses of my own (I do have four cats who are my family) ... but I do love horses and volunteer at a therapeutic riding center. This might be a good option if you are ever looking to donate a horse ... I know the horses in our barn are loved and cared for. Experienced horse people come to us to volunteer and remark how well are horses look and are cared for.

It's an option for you and any other horse parents that may be needing a new home for your "child".

What a lovely post. I used to ride frequently over those Bodega dunes and can just visualize you and your mare galloping around out there. Best, I LOVE how attached you are to your mare and emotionally healthy you seem to be about the *process* of readying her for challenges ahead. Best of luck.

One must be careful, as many states now have laws that would consider making lots of noise to be hunter harassment - just FYI!!

What is wrong with allowing meat buyers to buy these unwanted horses, no matter what the reason they are unwanted, and use the horse meat for the good cause of feeding other meat eating animals whether they be our pets or zoo animals. In nature when an animal dies or is killed, it always feeds other animals. This would be the most responsible way to end these unwanted horse's lives. Just composting them is such a waste.

Does the horse really know whether it is killed by injection or it was killed for meat? Death is death.

This would eliminate the need for more taxes (or added fees as you call it) and also eliminate the need for more rescues and more funding for more rescues. Raising the cost of caring/keeping horses will only exacerbate the amount of unwanted horses because more people will be unable to afford to keep them and therefore more people will be forced to get rid of their horses.
