Recipes For Horse Feeds

Mixing your own feed has many advantages, but you have to know what you’re doing.

Many of our readers have expressed an interest in mixing their own grain recipe for many reasons, including cost, feeding only what the horse truly needs and having control over quality and safety of ingredients (see our June 2009 feed survey where only 4 of 65 manufactures responded to our questions).

One of the biggest advantages to feeding this way that is you can separate the link between calories and supplementation. All hay-based diets need some supplementation. By adding your minerals separately, you can easily adjust the amount of feed you give without changing the minerals. …
